The tonic is often referred to as “home”, while subdominant moves you to the next note, and dominant makes you want to return back home to resolve the sound. They are the key elements to building a song. Tonic, subdominant, and dominant are the first, fourth, and fifth degrees in any scale. So what do they mean and why should I care? But I played piano for about fifteen years before I even knew what tonic, dominant, and subdominant was. And you may have heard just how fundamental these are to music theory.
